Here’s the second of our Boston Profiles, in which we look at first-time Boston Marathon runners all this week. The answers were provided by the runners themselves, without any editing on our part. We wish all Boston first-timers good luck on Monday and hope they enjoy their big moment!
Name: Scott Kimberling
Home town: Vancouver, Washington
At which marathon did you qualify for Boston and what was your time?
I qualified for Boston at the San Diego Rock N Roll Marathon (2007) with a time of 3:12:22.
What is your goal at the Boston Marathon?
My goal right now for Boston is to just finish. I started out in January and told myself I was going to put in a real “training program.” As the mileage increased so did my injuries, and they have progressively been getting worse. So we shall see what happens!
What does is mean to you to be going to Boston Marathon?
For me getting to run in the Boston Marathon is something special because as most of us know it seems to be the “Superbowl” of marathons.
What are you most looking forward to at the Boston Marathon?
I am looking forward to experiencing the whole thing, the history, the women’s Olympic trials the day before, running with that many people, who are all fast.
Do you have a picture of how the day will unfold? If so, what’s it look like?
Well this is going to be a little different having to be bused to the start, but once I get to the start, I just hope all goes well with my leg. I will know at about the half way point how I will do. I’m probably more worried about how I will feel the next day.
Anything you’d like to add?
I had ran my first marathon (Portland 2005) with no clue how I would do, and in fact my longest run before that one was only 11 miles, and was able run 3:32, so I figured with a little training I would be able to cut off the 13 minutes to qualify for Boston. When I put in the work, I was so excited to be able to get to 3:12 at San Diego. I think if others out there are thinking about qualifying, they should go for it. It is possible!
Good luck Scott in the race on Monday. We’ll let you know how he did!
