BOSTON — The Boston Athletic Assoication has annouced the elite field for the 2009 Boston Marathon. In addition to returning champions Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot and Dire Tune, this year there are a raft of top Americans in contention, including Olympians Ryan Hall, Brian Sell and Kara Goucher.

Headlining the field is four time champion and course record holder Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot of Kenya and defending women’s champion Dire Tune of Ethiopia. Also in the field are former champions Lidiya Grigoryeva of Russia and Timothy Cherigat of Kenya.

In addition to Challenging to Americans Hall, Sell and Goucher, other major challengers will be Deriba Merga and Gashaw Asfaw of Ethiopia and Salina Kosgei of Kenya.

American distance running is making a resurgence with the fine performances of runners like Hall and Sell at the Olympics in Beijing and the strength that Kara Goucher showed in her debut this past November in New York.
