USA Triathlon, the governing body of triathlon in the United States has named Matt Reed and Laura Bennett the 2008 Elite Athletes of the year. The two were recognized for their consistent top performancs, including Bennett’s fourth place at the Beijing Olympic Games and Reed’s fifth place at the 2008 ITU World Championships.
Along with Reed and Bennett, USAT also awarded a Andy Potts and Becky Lavelle the distinction of Non-ITU Elite Athletes of the year and Daniel Bretscher and Laurel Wassner as Professional Rockies of the Year.
According to Reed, “last year was a year of super highs and low lows, and this award helps me swallow my sub-par performance at my first Olympic games and know that my week in, week out performances were appreciated.” He was referring to his 32nd place finish at the Beijing Olympics, in the midst of stellar season with seven major victories, including the USAT National Championships and US Olympic Trials.
For her part, Bennett said, “we have several great women representing USA in triathlon. I feel honored to be among them and have the opportunity to be awarded the recognition for USAT Athlete of the year for 2008.”
