The 30-year-old Tolossa finished in 2 hours, 17 minutes, 26 seconds, nearly 4 minutes slower than last year’s time. He trailed for most of the race until Muindi fell back at about the 32-kilometer (20-mile) mark.

Russia’s Alevtina Biktimirova won the women’s race in 2:33:06, beating Japan’s Akemi-Isige Ozaki by more than a minute.

Biktimirova outran Ozaki, who was running her second marathon in just three weeks. Ozaki was entered in the race primarily to pace her teammate Kaori Yoshida, but decided to stay in the race and try for the win. Ozaki led the race until Biktimirova took the lead after the 30K mark. Ozaki finished in 2:34:22. Yoshida finished fourth in 2:43:21.

Tolossa and Biktimirova each took home $40,000 for their wins.
