The BBC is reporting that Paul Tergat will sit out the London Marathon this April. This comes after Tergat was involved in a military training course in recent months, amid the turmoil in his home country of Kenya. The former world record holder will focus on preparing for Beijing instead.
He was quoted as saying: “Right now, I am at 40% of my usual fitness and the London Marathon is rather close. My focus will be on the Beijing Olympics.”
He went on to add that, “We really need peace in our country and one of the things we must preserve at all cost is our sporting culture.”
This announcement comes at a time when the freedoms of Kenya’s elite marathon runners is up in the air as violence has rocked the country since elections there in December.
Tergat held the world record in the Marathon from 2003 to 2007 after runing 2:04:55 in Berlin in 2003. He also won two Olympic Silver medals in the 10,000M in 1996 and 2000 and has won Gold at the world championships eight times since 1995.
