According to the Bloomberg news service, world record holder Paula Radcliffe has withdrawn from the 2008 London Marathon because of a toe injury.

The 34-year-old, who in August will attempt to win her first Olympic title, sustained the injury to her right foot while training at altitude in Albuquerque, New Mexico, London marathon organizers said in a statement.

“I am desperately disappointed that I have to pull out of this year’s race,” Radcliffe said in the statement. “I love running in London and this race would have been the perfect test for me before the Olympic Games.”

Radcliffe, who took the women’s race at the New York City Marathon in November, won in London in 2002, 2003 and 2005.

The London line-up on April 13 still includes Gete Wami of Ethiopia, who Radcliffe beat by 23 seconds in New York, Ethiopian record holder Berhane Adere, Romania’s Constantina Tomescu-Dita and Svetlana Zakharova of Russia.
