Races: Rock N Roll Marathon series gets new drink

Looks like the Rock N Roll Marathon series is getting a new addition to its hydration stations: Cytomax will now be served in the aid stations along with water.

In a press release today, Elite Racing announced that Cytomax will now be served in the aid stations of all of its races and post-race finishing areas. It appears that the change will start with the Carlsbad 5000 on April 6, 2008 and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in Virginia Beach on August 31. That would mean that Cytomax would not yet be served at the Country Music Marathon and the Rock N Roll Marathoni in San Diego this year.

For those of you unfamiliar with Cytomax, the drink has long been popular with cyclists. Cytomax is made of a fairly complicated mix of complex carbohydrates, which includes maltodextrin, fructose and glucose. The performance variety does not contain sucrose or caffeine; but it does include sodium, magnesium, calcium and potassium.

As always, we recommend that you test any energy drink in your training before using it in a race. This is critical to ensure that your stomach is able to tolerate the blend and concentration of sugars in any particular drink. Make sure to experiment with the amount you can drink and how much plain water you should be drinking with it to ensure that you don’t create an upset stomach.

Coaches should consider stocking Cytomax as another alternative in their aid stations for those runners training for Rock N Roll Marathon series races to ensure that they are prepared to use the new drink.

Running Advice and News

  1. Take a few AquaJoes with you and it won’t matter what sports drink is on the course. See the video at

  2. Even though I’ve been running a while now, the whole “try it beforehand” think didn’t click until just now. I just signed up for the RnR Half in Va. Beach, so you better believe this summer I’ll be trying out Cytomax before the race … or taking something along with me.
