Races: 2008 Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon Results Corrected

Here I was going along with my Monday and I was besieged with e-mail asking why I hadn’t covered the Cleveland Marathon over the weekend. Who knew that there was such a following of my marathon running coverage over in Ohio?

Well it turns out that I’m now glad that I waited. Apparently, according to a story on CantonRep.com, the Associated Press report from the marathon had the winners listed incorrectly — so the information below from the AP is now based on the official results and reflects the correct winners.

Here’s the story from the CantonRep:

CLEVELAND In a May 18 story about the 31st annual Cleveland Marathon, The Associated Press erroneously reported the top two runners in the women’s division and the second- and third-place winners in the men’s division, based on unofficial results posted on the marathon’s Web site.

Donna Palisca, 30, of Norristown, Pa., won in 3 hours, 7 minutes and 27 seconds. Connie Gardner, 44, of Medina, finished second at 3 hours, 9 minutes and 26 seconds.

In the men’s division, James Beyer, 40, of Dayton, finished second at 2 hours, 34 minutes and 52 seconds. Rob Juergens, 44, of Avon Lake, was third at 2 hours, 35 minutes and 43 seconds.

The story incorrectly reported the time and homeland of the men’s winner and the time of the women’s third-place finisher. Retta Feyissa of Ethiopia, not Bronx, N.Y., won with a time of 2 hours, 33 minutes and 34 seconds, not 33 seconds. Jenni Culbertson was third at 3 hours, 9 minutes and 58 seconds, not 49 seconds.

Thanks to those of you in Ohio that are reading the blog and maybe I’ll get out there next year to cover the race personally.
