Marathoning: Wardian just misses treadmill marathon world record

The web-site Marathonguide.com is reporting that Michael Wardian just missed the world record for a marathon run on a treadmill. Wardian had planned to run in the Western States 100 mile trail race this weekend, but decided to go for the treadmill marathon world record instead after the race was cacnceled due to wild fires.

Wardian made the attempt at the Pacers running store in Fairfax, Virginia.

Unfortunately, technical glitches got in the way of a perfect run. The treadmill on which Wardian made the record attempt apparently stopped at the one hour and two hour marks during the run. Still, he was 30 seconds ahead of the record at 24 miles in 2:09:15.

After restarting the treadmill at the two hour mark, Wardian miscalculated the remaining distance and stopped his run with just over a mile to go. He started running again, but quit the attempt at the 25.9 mile mark in 2:22:35. He was already just outside of the record at this point.

Overcome by heat exhaustion, Wardian collapsed after the attempt and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Wardian told Marathonguide.com after the run, “I can not wait to try it again.”
