Races: LA Marathon changes dates; Surf City moves in to help

With news that the Los Angeles Marathon will change its dates in 2009, the Surf City Marathon in nearby Huntington Beach is stepping up to attact runners and find them slots in their race.

The Los Angeles Marathon announced earlier this week that it will change dates from February 16th, 2009 to May 25th, 2009. The date change stems in part from the change in a ownership of the race and new negotiations with the City of Los Angeles.

The change in dates leaves a gap for some Southern California runners who may be training for a winter marathon, now having to wait until late May to race. The date change also brings the Los Angeles Marathon within one week of the Rock N Roll Marathon in San Diego, potentially pitting the two large marathons against one another for the attention of marathoners in the region.

For its part, the Surf City Marathon said in a press release this week that it is making every attempt to help runners and charity groups with plans that may be impacted by the change in dates for the Los Angeles Marathon. Surf City will be held on February 1st, 2009 at Huntington Beach in Orange County, about 30 miles south of Los Angeles.

Race Director Amy Tomchak said that the Surf City Marathon can handle an additional 1,500 runners between the marathon and half marathon, but that the race will fill quickly. Surf City is expected to host about 16,000 runners and walkers in the marathon and half-marathon.
