Races: Abebe Yimer; Nadezhda Tuptova win 2008 Las Vegas Marathon

new-las-vegas-marathon-logoLAS VEGAS — Las Vegas resident Abebe Yimer won the 2008 Las Vegas Marathon in 2:27:27 with Nadezhda Tuptova taking honors in the women’s division in 2:48:20.

Yimer, an Ethiopian runner by heritage, beat out Geoffrey Kiprotich a Kenyan from Minnesota by just 30 seconds to take the race. Kiprotich finished in 2:27:59. Third place went to Brendon Moody of Van Wert, Ohio in 2:36:31.

In the women’s race, Nadezhda Tuptova of Gainsville, Florida took the win in 2:48:20. Second place went to Ramona Sanchez of Las Vegas in 2:56:33. Taking third was Beth Gerdes of Carlsbad, California in 3:03:19.

Emisal Favela won the Half-marathon in 1:09:48 and Cheryl Murphy won the women’s Half-marathon in 1:18:51.

There were 11,256 official finishers in both the marathon and half-marathon events, with slightly more women than men finishing the race. 5,414 men finished the events and and 5,842 women finished.
