Races: Mwobi wins 2009 Hong Kong Marathon in course record

HONG KONG — Cyprian Mwobi of Kenya won the 2009 Hong Kong Marathon in a new course record here on Sunday, while fellow Kenyan Winnie Nyansik took the women’s title. More than 55,000 runnners took part in the event.

Mwobi led from the start to finish, winning in 2:14:57 seconds, which was a new course record. South African Tubei Chirchir finished second 2:15.23 and Rotich Kirwa of Kenya third with 2:16.16.

“It is a good race,” said Mwobi, who took part in the Hong Kong Marathon for the second time. “The course here has many ups-and-downs, and I am satisfied that I could win the race and set a new course record.”

“It is not easy, as I can say the course is very tough,” Mwobe said after the race.

Winnie Nyansik clocked 2:41.25 to win the women’s race. Sunisa Saylomyen from Thailand took the silver medal with a time of 2:47.33. Chinese runner Zheng Wenrong finished third at 2:49.22.

“I didn’t expect to be a winner. I know the Chinese are very tough, so I have to run very fast to run away from them,” Nyansikera said after the race.

A record of 55,000 runners took part in the Hong Kong Marathon this year.
