Races — Moulton and Seckinger take 2009 National Marathon titles

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Patrick Moulton surpsised Michael Wardian today, coming from behind to win the National Marathon in a new course record of 2:21:18. Wardian, one of the top ultra-distance runners in the country and last year’s winner of the race, came in second in 2:22:55, which was his fastest time yet in four tries on the course.

“Early in the race, [the lead pack] was surging and I didn’t want to go with them.,” Moulton told the Washington Post after the race. “I wasn’t feeling the best, but I never gave up, so I was pleased with that.”

Wardian went on to run the Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach on Sunday where he finished third in 2:35:13. He reportedly is set to travel to Africa to run the 151-mile Marathon des Sables at the end of the week.

In the women’s division, 26 year-old Jeannette Seckinger, sprinted past Elena Orlova with 200 meters to go to win the race by five seconds in 2:48:39.
