Haile Gebrselassie the marathon world record holder will bid to win a second Bupa Great Manchester Run title on Sunday and will challenge the world record in the process.
Gebrselassie set a UK All-Comers’ record running unchallenged in his debut here four years ago in one of the world’s greatest 10 kilometre meetings. He insists he could have run even faster.
“The course was great and it is possible to break the world record here – had there been pacemakers I probably could have gone quicker,” insisted the 35-year-old Ethiopian after clocking 27:25.
Gebrselassie at that time was holder of the world record having posted a time of 27min 02sec in 2002, but since has lost that accolade to Micah Kogo.
