The Rock N Roll Marathon series is expanding once again, this time coming to Chicago in the form of a half-marathon. According to Competitor Group, the company that manages the musical racing series, they have acquired the Chicago Distance Classic, which will now become the Rock N Roll Chicago Half-marathon.

The first Rock N Roll Chicago Half-marathon will be held August 2nd, 2009.

Scott Dickey, Chief Operating Officer of the Competitor Group, said today: “With its rich musical history and passionate sports enthusiasts, Chicago is an ideal location to host a Rock ‘n’ Roll running event.”

The Chicago Distance Classic was organized by Runner’s World columnist John “The Penguin” Bingham. The race drew at least 10,000 runners and walkers in 2008 and has been held since at least 2003.

Registration opened today for the new Rock N Roll Chicago Half Marathon at www.rnrchicago.com. Race registration is being offered for a discounted entry fee when you register with coupon code WWTRN.

The Rock N Roll Marathon series has been expanding quickly over the last two years. The original series included the Rock N Roll Marathon in San Diego, the Country Music Marathon in Nashville and the Rock N Roll Half-marathon in Virginia Beach. Over the years, the series has added races in Arizona, San Antonio, San Jose and most recently Seattle.

The races tend to be quite large, most drawing 15,000 or more runners. Elite Racing, the division that organizes the group, also tends to bring in elite fields to most of the events, making them highly competitive.
